Boosting Metabolism

What is metabolism?

It is a term that is used to describe a set of life sustaining chemical reactions. The functions of metabolism are:

  • The conversion of food to fuel, that is, energy.
  • Elimination of nitrogenous waste.
  • The synthesis of all compounds that are needed by the cells.

This process converts all the food that you consume into energy.

Metabolism is the rate at which your body processes the food that you feed it. Metabolic rate is the number of calories that are used by your body to carry out these basic functions.

So people have a fast metabolism. This means that the food that they eat gets processed fast. Increase in metabolic rate will help you to lose weight faster. As you tend to age, you metabolic rate goes on decreasing.

Boosting metabolism:

Here are ways to boost your metabolism/ how to boost metabolism:

  • Exercise:

You can boost your metabolism with exercise. Exercise for at least 30 minutes each day. You can hit the gym too. Try doing strength exercises. Try building your muscles. Muscles burn more calories than fat.

Even if you do not want to go to the gym, it’s ok. Try for other ways to exercise. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk down to stores instead of going by a vehicle etc.

  • Drink plenty of water:

Various studies have shown that drinking plenty of water can increase your metabolic rate. Stay well hydrated. Start drinking a little more water than you usually do.

  • Add spices to your meals:

Spicy foods contain natural chemicals that can increase your metabolism. Spice up your dishes with red chilli flakes.

  • Proteins:

Increase the intake of protein rich foods. Your body requires many more calories for digesting proteins than it does for fat or carbohydrates. Include protein rich foods like eggs, nuts, legumes etc. to your diet.

  • Drink green tea and coffee:

Drinking green tea and black coffee can increase your metabolic rate. Have a cup or two of these to increase your metabolism.
