The thyroid gland resides in our neck. It has a butterfly like appearance. With the hormones it secretes, this gland impacts most of the metabolic processes in our body. The disorders related to this gland are more prevalent in women than in men.

The main problems related to this gland are:

  • Hypothyroidism:

In hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland does not produce sufficient thyroid hormones.

  • Hyperthyroidism:

In hyperthyroidism, the thyroid gland produces excessive thyroid hormones.

 

Hypothyroidism:

Causes:

Hypothyroidism can be caused by:

  • Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis:

    Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an auto-immune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks its own thyroid gland.

  • Subacute Thyroiditis:

    Subacute thyroiditis is actually a phase of hypothyroidism. Eventually, the thyroid function returns to normal.

  • Very little iodine in diet:

    The thyroid gland needs iodine for functioning. Hence, if you do not have sufficient iodine in your diet, it may also cause hypothyroidism.

Symptoms:

The symptoms of hypothyroidism include:

  • Dry skin
  • Dry hair
  • Hair loss
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Weight gain
  • Constipation
  • Intolerance to cold

If you notice the above symptoms, or at least a few of them then immediately consult a doctor. Consequently, he will ask you to do Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroxine (T4) tests which will determine if you have hypothyroidism or not.

Diet:

Here are some foods that should be avoided if you have hypothyroidism. your diet plan for hypothyroidism should exclude these:

  • Soy
  • Fatty foods
  • Sugary foods
  • Processed foods
  • Coffee
  • Excess fibre

The above foods should not be a part of your diet plan for hypothyroidism since they are known to worsen your condition.

 

Hyperthyroidism:

Causes:

Hyperthyroidism can be caused by:

  • Excess iodine: Excess intake of iodine can cause hyperthyroidism.
  • Graves’ disease: Graves’ disease can also cause hyperthyroidism.

Symptoms:

Following are the symptoms of hyperthyroidism:

  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Irregular and scarce menstrual flow
  • Brittle hair
  • Difficulty in sleeping
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Increased sensitivity to heat

If you notice the above symptoms, or at least a few of them then immediately consult a doctor. He may ask you to do a few tests, such as, cholesterol test, TSH, tryglyceride test etc. These tests will help you to determine whether you have hyperthyroidism or not.

Diet:

You can make the following foods a part of your diet plan for hyperthyroidism:

  • Berries
  • Yogurt
  • Broccoli
  • Soy
  • Cauliflower

Exclude the following from your diet plan for hyperthyroidism:

  • Sugar
  • Processed foods
  • Fried food
  • Caffeine
